Index in generated texts

I would be interested to know of any technique for equipping a
generated text with an index. I have an important document (a standard)
extracted from a larger book, and so far it lacks an index. Obviously I
could add index markers to the generated text, but they would be lost
on each new generation. Is there any way to equip the original text
(the book chapters) with index markers that will be kept in the
generated document?

Thanks in advance,

How is the text "generated"? As in a Frame "generate"?
