Discussion:
Text in table doesn't hyphenate
(too old to reply)

Hi,
I have a Framemaker 7.0 table (running on Windows).
For some reason the text does not hyphenate in the table cells. The words
and also the numbers in the table cells simply fill the text line and break
as soon as the line reaches the cell end.
Paragraph format properties have a check mark in the proper place, i.e.
hyphenation is definitely turned on. Also, the "American English" language
is applied to paragraph and text.

Can someone give me a hint?

Thanks for considering this.

Hi Jededia

What about the values for Word Spacing and Automatic Hyphenation in
Paragraph Designer?

Hi Jededia

He did say the paragraph format hyphenation check box was checked. I
don't understand why word spacing would come into it.

However, there are other parameters for hyphenation, shown in the
paragraph designer (properties) box: Max # adjacent, shortest prefix,
shortest word, shortest suffix. It may be that the table cell is narrow
enough that you expect hyphenation on very short words, etc. Reduce them
all to 1, except "Max # adjacent", and see what happens.

The table columns are wide enough for a couple of words (54 mm).
also, the settings you mentioned were properly set, i.e. on 1, except "Max#
adjacent", which is on 5.

The text in a cell would, for example, hypenate like this:

this is an eampl
e text showing h
ow the text hyph
enates. looks ki
nda cooky.

Any more suggestions?
I would like to point out that the text hyphenates well outside of the
table, even if the same paragraph formats are used.

The only way I can evoke that strage effect you demonstrated is by
using nonbreaking spaces between all the words.

I can hardly imagine you would have used them unintentionally, unless
you imported the table text from somewhere else.

Johannes
